Wood Carving Benefit for the Soldiers

    Friday, September 29th, 2006

    This is cool.
A first-of-its-kind event is underway in central Iowa’s Poweshiek County this week — chainsaw carving to raise money for American soldiers injured in the War on Terror. Jerilyn Renaud of Grinnell is organizing the event featuring 15 chainsaw carvers from nine states and Canada. She says her children came up with the idea [...]

Will South Korean Be Next UN Secretary General?

    Friday, September 29th, 2006

His name is Ban Ki-moon and he’s kicking butt in informal polling of the UN members. I like the idea of a South Korean as the Secretary General. I’ll admit that I don’t know much about him, but anybody from South Korea should understand the danger of belligerent nations, with Kim Jong-Il’s crazy ass just [...]

Wilton, Iowa Mayor Arrested With Drugs

    Friday, September 29th, 2006

We’ve got our own Marion Barry! Via the QC Times:
Wilton Mayor Dick Summy was arrested today by state agents on charges of conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance (marijuana) and violation of the drug tax stamp law, according to officials with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’?s Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
    What a moron.

Our Allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and… the Czech Republic?

    Thursday, September 28th, 2006

We know the elected leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the majority of the citizens themselves, are American allies. Yesterday, however, they made comments that were stronger and more forceful than I ever expected. Also of note, the Czech Republic made welcome comments regarding some of the world’s biggest dirtbags; dirtbags the US [...]

    7-Eleven Drops Venezuelan-Owned Citgo

    Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

There are so many reasons why you don’t want to mess with the United States. Apparently, Hugo Chavez did not consider them all. Only a few days after calling the President “the devil” from his privileged seat in New York City, 7-Eleven has dropped Venezuelan-owned Citgo from its stores.
Hugo Chavez thought his political grand-standing could [...]

Congressional Spotlight: Rep. Steve King, Iowa

    Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

    From the {sigh} Seattle Post-Intelliger:

    Among King’s notable comments:
-He argued that the media exaggerated the story of abuse at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison.
-After compiling what he called an accurate civilian violent death rate for Iraq, he said living there was safer than in some U.S. cities, including New Orleans and Detroit.” I have a feel for [...]

    Lawsuit Against Video Game

    Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

A boy killed three members of his family. The remaining family members are suing the makers of Grand Theft Auto, claiming the video game caused the boy to become violent. You can read it if you want. The best part is at the end:
Paul Posey [the killer]’s brother Verlin hopes the suit will save lives.”If [...]

    Hippies Arrested in Des Moines

    Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

The State of Iowa knows how to handle smelly protesters.
Eleven peace activists were arrested Monday after trying to pressure two members of Iowa’s congressional delegation into signing a declaration to support a new course of action in Iraq.
[US Rep. Leonard] Boswell, a Democrat, said in a statement that he wouldn’t sign such a pledge because [...]

Brazil Murder Rate Higher Than War Zone, Dems Demand US Pulls Out Of Rio De Janeiro

    Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

The first part of the title is true, the second part could happen.
More than 150 Brazilians were murdered each day last year on average, putting Brazil on a par with some war zones in terms of its homicide rate, the Justice Ministry said on Monday. Some 55,000 Brazilians died of homicide in 2005 — a [...]

The Madden Curse Strikes, Again: Shaun Alexander Breaks Foot

    Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

I remembered reading about the number of individuals who have graced the cover of the Madden football series who end up injured or in trouble by year’s end. Well, it’s happened, again.
First, a quick recap of the curse:
In 2003, cover athlete Michael Vick broke his leg just one day after the game hit the shelves. [...]

Venezuelan Detained At Airport, US Apologizes; Venezuela Rejects Apology

    Monday, September 25th, 2006

So what if a foreign minister was detained in New York? So what if Venezuela is filing a formal complaint with the US and the UN?
Why the hell is anyone in the US apologizing to anyone in Venezuela? What hypocritical BS.
First of all, he was detained for all of 90 minutes. I’ve waited longer for [...]

    Muslim Outrage

    Monday, September 25th, 2006

Great article from the Calgary Sun re: Muslim outrage. A snippet:
Radical Muslims, it seems, are always outraged about some thing. Where’s the news in that?
Osama bin Laden is still outraged over a battle between Muslims and Christians in Andalucia, Spain way back in the year 711. [...]
