  • The Blagojevich Saga

By PrivatePigg ~ December 30th, 2008. Filed under: Democrats, Iraq, Obama, quote, race, race relations.

    Got love those Illinois politicians…

    1. Cite: “Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, were arrested today by FBI agents for what U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald called a “staggering” level of corruption involving pay-to-play politics in Illinois’ top office.

Blagojevich is accused of a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy, including alleged attempts by the governor to try to sell or trade the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama in exchange for financial benefits for the governor and his wife. Blagojevich also is accused of obtaining campaign contributions in exchange for other official actions.”

    2. Cite: “Gov. Rod Blagojevich will not appoint anyone to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama, the governor’s lawyer said today.

Speaking at a news conference following his appearance before a committee weighing Blagojevich’s impeachment, lawyer Ed Genson was asked if Blagojevich would make an appointment against the wishes of Democrats across the state and country.

“No,” Genson replied. “(U.S. Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid said that they’re not going to accept anybody he picks. Why would he do that?”"

    3. Cite: “Gov. Rod Blagojevich is expected today to name former Illinois Atty. Gen. Roland Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate. The action comes despite warnings by Democratic Senate leaders that they would not seat anyone appointed by the disgraced governor who faces criminal charges of trying to sell the post, sources familiar with the decision said.”

Is there a single Chicago pol we can trust?

Update: Well, the news conference went as scheduled. Roland Burris has been selected. Representative Bobby Rush even made it a race issue using words like “lynch,” etc. insinuating that if Burris isn’t seated it’s because “we” are racist. They kept mentioning “the number of black Senators in Congress,” etc. Does that matter? Who cares? The main issue is Blagojevich’s indictment. But even if we get past that, the man picked to be Senator should be the most qualified - black, white, red, yellow, purple. Race never should matter! Even MLK himself mentioned content of character before skin color. But blacks themselves can’t seem to get past it. Ridiculous. I am so sick of it, and I am sure I am not the only one.

    Update #2: We’ve got a quote:

“There are no African-Americans in the Senate,” Rush said. “And I don’t think that anyone — any U.S. senator who’s sitting in the Senate right now — wants to go on record to deny one African-American for being seated in the U.S. Senate.”

So what’s important is purely this man’s skin color, right? Not the fact that the entire appointment is mired in scandal, or that he may (or may not) even be qualified for the position. It doesn’t matter that Blagojevich’s dealings have effectively prevented any appointee from effectively representing Illinois. The actual running of the government and an actual representative who can effectively advocate for Illinois is only mildly important, right? Skin color above all else! Unless you are white - then you are a racist and you should lose your job.

More: Michelle, Hot Air, Flopping Aces.

Update #3: Now it looks like Capital Dems are prepared to physically block Burris if he shows up. Those racist Democrats.

Update #4: It just won’t end… More from Rush: invoking George Wallace.
