  • Hopenchange: Not so Much

By PrivatePigg ~ January 19th, 2009. Filed under: Democrats, Obama, liberalism.

Hope and change hasn’t even been sworn in yet. If Bush had been so incompetent in the run-up to his inauguration he would have been impeached his first day on the job.

    Geez:

Joe Biden’s wife said Monday that he had his pick of being Barack Obama’s running mate or the secretary of state nomination that eventually went to Hillary Rodham Clinton, a slip that the vice president-elect immediately tried to shush…

“Joe had the choice to be secretary of state or vice president,” she said. Her husband turned to his wife with his finger to his lips and a “Shhhh!” that sent the audience into laughter. “OK, he did,” Jill Biden said in her defense. The vice president-elect blushed, grimaced and gave his wife a hug while the audience continued to erupt in laughter. “That’s right,” he finally said to his wife. “Go ahead.”

After the exchange aired on television three hours later, Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander denied Jill Biden’s account in a statement e-mailed to reporters.

“To be clear, President-elect Obama offered Vice President-elect Biden one job only — to be his running mate,” the statement said. “And the vice president-elect was thrilled to accept the offer.”

If it’s an honest mistake, Joe doesn’t blush and “Shhh” his wife. An honest misrepresentation of the facts on the Oprah Winfrey show should be met with a casual “that’s not exactly the case.” It’s not like Oprah’s going to challenge him on it. It’s not like he’s on some tough-talkin’ news show. It’s Oprah. She drinks the Obama Kool-Aid. Biden could have quickly told the truth if that was the case. Biden could have easily explained the mix-up on the show. Instead, he “shhh” his wife, blushes, hugs her as they laugh, and then later releases a statement that denies it. Why? Because he was completely caught off guard by his wife’s inadvertent admission of a fact that should not have been made public. Just put yourself in Biden’s shoes. Do act they way he acted if someone misrepresents something honestly, or when somebody lets something slip that the other person was not supposed to hear?

The statement then followed up with this:

Alexander’s statement said, “Like anyone who followed the presidential campaign this summer, Dr. Jill Biden knew there was a chance that President-elect Obama might ask her husband to serve in some capacity and that, given his background, the positions of vice president and secretary of state were possibilities. Dr. Biden’s point to Oprah today was that being vice president would be a better fit for their family because they would get to see him more and get to participate in serving more.”

That’s one of the worst attempts at spin I’ve ever seen. It’s a misrepresentation of the situation to say, “Dr. Biden’s point to Oprah today was that being vice president would be a better fit for their family because they would get to see him more and get to participate in serving more.” Dr. Biden didn’t just say that they discussed why VP would be a better fit for their family than Secretary of State, as the released statement implies. Dr. Biden first told us why they discussed the VP spot being a better fit for their family than the Secretary of State spot - because Joe had been offered both. She clearly made that point. The released statement either plays us all for fools or is just completely dishonest.

Pfft. So although Joe Biden is never offered his choice of jobs, somehow his smart wife, Dr. Biden, thinks he has been actually offered his choice of the spots, she recalls very honest discussion with her husband regarding which spot is best, and she recalls the two of them making a decision. But, in fact, none of the above took place because Biden was never actually offered the Secretary of State job. Right. They are liars or Dr. Biden has Alzheimer’s.

Which also means that Hillary was choice #2 for Secretary of State. That ought to go over well. And since we know she had no chance at being VP, she was a Joe Biden “Yes” away from having no part in the new administration. I’m sure Clinton and Obama will work together well now that this little nugget is available. Not that Clinton represents the kind of change Obama promised anyway.

All this after Obama’s Commerce Secretary pick Bill Richardson had to withdraw his name due to a pending grand jury investigation.

And all of this after Obama’s Treasury Secretary pick was discovered to have knowingly not paid his taxes and disregarded the advice of his accountant on deducting expenses. Tax-paying is normally a very important virtue to Democrats… The pick for Treasury Secretary has yet to withdraw his name. In fact, according to Chuck Todd, in normal years Obama’s Treasury Secretary pick would be dead in the water, but because he’s so important for being a black President, no one is going to challenge Obama (no cite, I saw Chuck Todd on the news last night).
