Unsurprisingly, our new troll wants to use a technicality to make discrimination against women legal. I shouldn’t be shocked, but I am. Pigs like PrivatePigg are actually seeking ways to pay women less for equal work. That’s a political opinion that I would think would belong in the dustbin of history, right next to segregated buses. Congratulations, President Obama

Congratulations to President Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States.

To minorities of all backgrounds, the election of Barack Obama clears a mental barrier that minorities can, in fact, accomplish anything. Blacks have for many years been able to reach the top of American society, whether as professionals, business leaders, or as professional athletes and movies stars. But being the President was something new (as this article demonstrates - in one year the percentage of blacks that say King’s “Dream” has been fulfilled went from 34% to 69%).

For whites who grew up after the Civil Rights movement, and in a place where racism really didn’t exist, Obama’s election more-or-less confirms what they already knew: that America was not racist. For these whites, the election of Barack Obama hopefully foreshadows the end of race-relations as we currently know them, where people like Sharpton or Jackson can hold a business or entity hostage over an arguably offensive comment.

Personally, I just hope that the “Cult of Obama” ends sometime soon and Obama is allowed to get to work. It’s not healthy for our country if a sizable percentage of the population has made the President a celebrity icon. The adoration allows those being adored to get away with things with which a more honest population generally might not allow. No matter your feelings for Obama, one must recognize that for the best of our country, the population needs to be able to honestly view Obama’s decisions and critically evaluate the things that he does and does not do. The fact that he is black makes the election and inauguration historic, but that fact won’t fix the economy, solve the crises in the Middle East, or prevent another terrorist attack. His routine of giving speeches with fancy rhetoric won’t get us anywhere, either. Hopefully we can get on with the business of leading this country. Already we’re being subjected to a Treasury Secretary that under normal conditions would probably not get confirmed, and we’re on the verge of simply giving Obama a free pass for 4 years - simply because he’s black. I seem to recall liberals complaining that one of the reasons we got into our “current mess” was that the people and the media were complicit in allowing Bush to rush us into war and erode our civil liberties because we had adored Bush since 9/11. Now liberals want us to do the same thing with Obama.

Politically, I love my country before my party, so I hope that Obama succeeds. I don’t think he can succeed (if the population and media are honest) if he pushes an extremely liberal agenda. Thus, I hope he moderates his agenda as he is faced with the realities of office and of a skeptical public.

It will be an interesting few years.
