The Daily Douche

You see the title to his post? “Krugman Pwns Jindal.” Yeah, that’s not a typo. He really meant “Pwns.” Whatever the derivation of the word “pwn” may be, it is now almost exclusively used by high school-age or early college-age “hip” kids to talk smack to each other and describe complete domination (not mere “ownership”) of another person or player (whichever the case may be). It is not a real word. Young kids use it in computer-speak to sound cool. The problem, of course, is that Sullivan is 45 years old. Not exactly a spring chicken, and certainly not nearly young enough to be using such a ridiculous term as “pwn” without sounding like a complete douche.
It’s like the posts about Jim Rome I put up at Liberty Pundit before the switch over. Rather than say “That guy got hit in the face by the ball,” Jim Rome says “That cat got blasted in his grill by the rock.” And he calls everyone “cat” all the time. Again, Rome is not a wannabe frat boy. He’s 44. Grow up.
On a related note, this is why SportsCenter sucks. I get my sports highlights from Sky Sports and ESPN.com. I cannot suffer watching the show anymore as goons like Stuart Scott, Scott Van Pelt, and others try to “out-cool” each other by seeing which middle-aged man can drop the most high school-ish buzzwords per highlight.
Grown people do not want to read “pwn,” they do not want to hear about all those “cats” who are “freakin’ degenerates for gadgets, man,” and they do not want their sports highlights full of “boo-ya” and all of that other crap that spews from Van Pelt’s mouth (”Van Pelt employs a variety of catch phrases on SportsCenter, making references to such entities as his alma mater, the University of Maryland (”Let’s go to Bentley’s!” is uttered whenever the “Terps” win a college football or basketball game), and the rock group Tenacious D. Sometimes lines from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? or other movies are uttered. He also frequently references the television shows Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Flight of the Conchords. In addition to his catchphrases, he also employs a handful of American English dialects and accents, including Baltimorese, as well as the Philadelphia and the Boston accents.“).
As an aside, does anyone else want to retch when they see Sullivan’s side art talking about how he is a conservative? What a joke! Dude, you can call yourself whatever you want - it doesn’t make you “it.” I don’t care if you think the Republicans have lost their conservative roots (I agree), you simply are not a conservative yourself if you have voted for either John Kerry or Barack Obama (and Sullivan supported both). And he doesn’t just “support” Obama, either. It’s a man-crush. There simply is no shred of conservatism in anyone who supports two of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate. Apparently, Sullivan is the only one who doesn’t seem to notice these glaring inconsistencies (”The 25 Most Influential Liberals In The U.S. Media” - Sullivan is #19 (”A granddaddy of Washington blogging and a former editor of The New Republic, he clings unconvincingly to the “conservative” label even after his fervent endorsement of Obama.“)). And John Kerry.
